Prince William and Kate Middleton have now been married for more than 10 years, but things weren’t always perfect for their pair throughout the duration of their lengthy courtship. Back in 2007 the pair endured a brief split during which Prince William was spotted out at a number of nightclubs letting loose while Middleton kept a brave face. Now royal biographer Ingrid Seward is speaking out about that time in the couple’s relationship, revealing how Kate likely felt.

“It shows Kate’s strength of character that she had the guts to get up, go out, look amazing and hang out at nightclubs as if she was the happiest person in the world. But we know she wasn’t,” Seward revealed to the Mirror of how Middleton spent her time during the brief period of the split.

The biographer also shed some light on how the couple initially began their romance, telling the publication, “Kate and William’s relationship began as a friendship, but when Kate did that catwalk show, that was the first time he really looked at her as more than a lovely friend. Early dates were very simple.”

The couple have publicly spoken of their breakup before, and in a 2010 interview Prince William shared, “Well I think to be honest, I wouldn’t believe everything you read in the paper but in that particular instance we did split up for a bit. But that was just, we were both very young, it was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff.”

Middleton also noted in their engagement interview that, “I think I at the time wasn’t very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised, or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time. Looking back on it.”

Now the couple have been married since 2011 and are parents to three children, taking their early breakup as a learning experience that eventually strengthened their relationship down the line. As the duchess approaches her 40th birthday looking as stunning as ever, we’re certain Prince William is thrilled they reunited all those years ago. Finally, a happily ever after.
